A Historic Win for AFSCME Local 199

On August 28th, negotiations with the County concluded. The Local 199 Contract Committee fought back all the Mayors previous proposals to our union, including drastic wage cuts, extending concessions from our previous contract, and implementing measures that would have removed our rights on the job.

Our Contract Committee also fought for a wage increase and won a 1% raise in 2017!

“This is a historic contract for our union,” said Ken Attard, a member of local 199’s Contract Committee. “Anyone who saw how bad the Mayor’s proposals were when we first started out and saw what was at stake would never have thought we would win what we did, but we fought for everything, and we won.”

“Now it’s time for us to sign up every single one of our coworkers who are covered under this contract,” said Dania Martinez, who is also a Contract Committee member. “We have to move our coworkers to understand that more membership means a better contract. Let’s keep up the momentum.”

Moving forward, Local 199 is organizing departmental meetings to discuss the contract. Our contract ratification vote will be held on September 24th. Details to follow.
